IceTV’s 5th Birthday celebrations

May 12th, 2010

That’s right, it’s been 5 years since we first launched our ground breaking service in Australia, back when people had barely heard the term “EPG”, let alone knew they would soon be able to record every episode of their favourite shows automatically, from virtually anywhere, anytime.

“Five years on and still going strong. What a remarkable roller-coaster ride it has been. Packed full of Australian and worldwide firsts for any EPG service provider, our tiny company has continued to lead the way. Making recording and managing TV viewing, as simple as ‘set & forget’.” – IceTV’s General Manager, Matt Kossatz.

Here’s just a snapshot of what we’ve achieved and why we’re celebrating:

  • 2005 – Launched Australia’s first independent EPG service for selected Australian PVR users and moved quickly to support Australian Media Center users.
  • 2006 – Launched Australia’s first interactive TV Guide website (& mobile site), giving Aussies the ability to log-in online and to set their favourite shows to automatically record at home. Teamed up with Elgato to offer Mac users a total TV recording solution.
  • 2007 – Successfully defended the right for there to be an independent Australian EPG supplier by defeating the Nine Network in Federal Court and made the Sydney Morning Herald’s – 20 Most Defining Moments of 2007.
  • 2008 – Launched the most advanced TV Guide iPhone app worldwide, offering remote recording capabilities and which still leads the way in terms of advanced series recording options. Also released interactive TV Guide widgets (for Mac & PC), a Facebook app, added ‘keyword’ series recording and won the SmartHouse “Best Vision Product”.
  • 2009 – Took the Nine Network case to the High Court and won a unanimous decision. Expanded service coverage for regional Australians, added independent listings for all the new Freeview channels and released support for Microsoft Windows 7 users.
  • 2010 (so far) – Launched ‘Advanced Searching’ to make it even easier to find your favourite shows and setup keyword recordings and welcomed both Strong & DViCO to the list of leading PVR brands to support IceTV.

Here’s a sneak preview of what’s to come in the next 5 months, let alone 5 years:

  • Apps, apps and more apps! IceTV will launch new interactive TV Guide apps for Android phones, Samsung phones and more. Giving users the instant ability to remotely schedule their favourite TV shows to be recorded at home, from wherever they are. We’re also set to launch a new version of our iPhone app.
  • A brand new website with massive improvements made to our interactive TV Guide online. The new user interface will make it even simpler and smarter for Aussie free-to-air TV viewers to automatically record every episode of their favourite TV shows.
  • New features, such as IceTV’s ‘New Shows’ which will give our members the ability to schedule a new show or new TV series to record at home automatically, weeks … maybe even months before it is due to be on TV! Truly “You’ll never miss that show again – just set and forget”.

With more and more content coming to digital free-to-air television, both in Australia and New Zealand, and with less time to watch it, you need someone to look after all your recordings for you.

That’s where IceTV comes in. Regardless of whether your favourite shows change timeslot, switch days or even channels, or disappear for 6 months, IceTV will make sure your device at home records it for you. So you’ll never miss another episode again.

Oh… did we mention IceTV launching in New Zealand?
