Nine announces initial plans for 2nd digital channel

March 24th, 2009

According to Lara Sinclair over at The Australian in an article published yesterday titled “David Gyngell confirms plans for digital”, the Nine Network has confirmed it will launch a ‘general entertainment channel’ as its second standard definition digital channel at some point in the “second half” of this year.

Nine’s CEO David Gyngell reportedly told the media that the second channel will be “an original channel” and “not just time-shifted”, but he was also quoted in saying “delivering to our advertisers… that’s our primary focus” when asked about the new channel.

According to the article, the new standard definition channel “could look like a cross between general entertainment pay-TV channels TV1 and Fox8″ as well as “include re-runs of old sit-coms… plus some lifestyle programming”.

Although no official launch date has been announced by Nine, it does look like we can expect to see some ‘good time oldies’ back on the TV screen thanks to Nine, just on another channel.
