Digital TV switchover date confirmed by Senator Conroy

March 26th, 2008

Today at the Australian Broadcasting Summit, Senator Conroy announced the switchover date for Australian free-to-air TV: December 31, 2013. Beyond this date, no analogue free-to-air TV transmissions will be made, freeing up bandwidth for additional digital channels and other digital services.

Senator Conroy also announced that a detailed roadmap for the switchover will be released by the end of 2008 and that 15 free-to-air channels will be available in most metropolitan regions by mid-late 2009.

Today’s announcement comes as no surprise and paints a very positive future for free-to-air TV in Australia.

IceTV is the leading independent electronic program guide (EPG) provider for free-to-air TV in Australia. IceTV’s service is compatible with the leading brands of Media Center PCs, Macs with TV tuners and personal video recorders (DVR or PVR) sold in Australia.
